LAHORE: Extreme cold weather has come closer to an end as the minimum temperature would start falling from now onwards, said Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) officials.
They said the cloudy weather would get clear by Tuesday (today), followed by sunny weather throughout Punjab.
It may be noted that the latest spell of westerly waves was loaded with thick clouds, which brought rain at the immediate past weekend throughout Punjab. Rains are likely to extend to the South and upper Punjab, followed by a fresh spell of snowfall in the hilly areas.
The month of January has witnessed 136 millimeter rain in two separate spells, one on 7th January while the other one at the last weekend. In this way, the month of January has witnessed maximum rain of the winter season. There was no rain since 24th October, as both November and December were proved dry months.
According to the PMD officials, the minimum temperature was escalating due to the clouds brought by the latest spell of westerly waves in between Jan 21-23, resulting into 36 millimeter rain in the city. In Islamabad, they said, some 70 millimeter was recorded during the current spell.
It may be noted that the Met Office had recorded minimum temperature as 9.8 degree Celsius at Lahore airport on Tuesday morning, which had fallen further to 13C by the afternoon. The minimum temperature had dropped to 6 degree Celsius in the middle of last week.
The ongoing coldness was a direct impact of snowfall, which was recorded at one and a half feet during the present three day spell of rains in the province as well as the northern areas.
Director PMD Shahid Abbas said dry weather would sustain for another 10 days amidst sunny days and relatively warm nights. The extreme cold weather is set to take a pleasant turn and the chances of chilly wind are low as the gradient of the north-western is very low. He said the cooling effect of weather would start diminishing soon the moisture evaporates with the appearance of sun from Wednesday onwards. There is a chance of another rain after 5th February, he added.
According to another official, the present spell of light rain was favourable to the crops of wheat and gram, as it has penetrated the soil. Had there been torrential rain, there was a strong chance of flowing out the rainy water, he added.
