Wednesday proved a bit more terrible, as power failure prolonged to almost eight hours in some areas of the city. Power outages amidst heavy rain humid weather kept on trying the consumers at large, cursing the circles concerned with no clue as when their misery would come to an end.
Power breakdown after every alternate hour has become hallmark of the common man's life. According to the power consumers, it is not the shortfall but mishandling of the problem, leading to unbearable impact on their lives. Interestingly, the Energy Management Cell of the Ministry of Water and Power, as usual, kept on blaming the limited or non-supply of fuel to power generation plants due to default of payments to the Pakistan State Oil (PSO).
Residents of interior part of the city were the most affected of long hours load shedding without any break. They were of the view that duration for load shedding has been suddenly increased in their areas. The daily wagers and small vendors are making huge losses due to repeated power breakdowns. Frequency of work available to them has dropped heavily, causing them an average monthly loss of Rs 20,000.
The domestic as well commercial consumers criticised both the government and the opposition for more busy in politics and campaigns for upcoming elections then overcoming power crisis. It may be noted that some power plants are dysfunctional due to reduced supply of fuel, while HUBCO (producing 900MW) and its Unit 2 were closed down as per the annual scheduled closure.
