Pakistan not far from 'Sri Lanka moment': Imran Khan

  • PTI chief says public will soon pour out on streets to protest corruption
Published July 23, 2022

In an apparent reference to nationwide protests by Sri Lankan public and storming of the presidential palace, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf Chairman Imran Khan on Saturday said that Pakistan was near a similar moment.

“In just over 3 months, the Zardari-Sharifs' mafia has brought the country to its knees politically and economically simply to save their illegally accumulated wealth amassed over 30 years of plundering Pakistan,” he tweeted.

“My question is how long will state institutions continue to allow this?”

“I can say with certainty after my interaction with our nation and their response to my call for Haqeeqi Azadi that people of Pakistan have had enough and will not allow these mafias to continue their loot and plunder. We are not far from Sri Lanka moment when our public pours out into streets," the PTI chairman said.

On Friday, Khan urged his workers and supporters to come out on streets and protest after Punjab Assembly Deputy Speaker Dost Muhammad Mazari scrapped 10 votes of PML-Q during the Punjab CM election and turned the tables in favour of Hamza Shehbaz.

Election for Punjab CM puts further strain on democracy, fails to break impasse

PML-Q’s PTI-backed candidate Pervez Elahi garnered 186 votes but lost the Punjab chief minister's seat to Hamza after Mazari nullified 10 votes on account of a letter received from PML-Q leader Chaudhry Shujaat. Hamza received 179 votes.

In the letter, Shujaat wrote “As party head of Pakistan Muslim League, I have issued directions to all my provincial members to cast their votes in favour of Muhammad Hamza Shehbaz Sharif.”

Subsequently, Khan called a nationwide protest. “I am in shock at what happened in the Punjab Assembly,” he said.

The PTI chairman said that the people will never accept this; “the people, especially the youth, should hold peaceful protests for their rights”. He also said that until the culprits face justice there was no future for Pakistan.

Earlier this month, thousands of protesters stormed Sri Lankan President Gotabaya Rajapaksa's home and office and the prime minister's official residence, as demonstrations over their inability to overcome a devastating economic crisis erupted into violence.

The soldiers and police were unable to hold back a crowd of chanting protesters demanding Rajapaksa's resignation and blaming him for the country's worst economic crisis in seven decades.

The protest forced Sri Lanka's President Gotabaya Rajapaksa to step down.

Pakistan will never be a Sri Lanka - Part 1 Sri Lanka has 4 million Tamils, who want to,& always wanted,to secede. There was a 3 decades war, which drained the Sri Lanka economy - had Lanka set up the right economic matrix ,in those decades - the nation would have been a superpower today. It is the land of Ravana, who flew Sita, the empress of India on an AEROPLANE,& Rama took 12 years to make a bridge,to Lanka (made by apes) It was the RAW which funded & trained the LTTE,& has caused the ruin of Lanka.RAW also interfered in the Lanka elections & Presidential selection,on many instances. Pakistan is not,in that place. The Afghan & Terror war harmed Pakistan - but the players were superpowers,& not regional hegemons like India.Pakistan was NOT adequately compensated for the war - but no doom scenario, like the LTTE in Lanka (where the war was fought on Lankan soil). At the EOD,Pakistan is better off,not having the USSR,on its Western border..dindooohindoo

Pakistan will never be a Sri Lanka - Part 2 Lanka is a nation of 22 million - which means that THE NATION CANNOT RAISE MONEY,FROM ITS OWN - via taxes. So there is NO turnaround plan.It is not a case of rampant power theft or lack of FUNDS,to import Coal & Gas.There is no shortage of dem& for power & gas,or funds for the same - the issue is the USD reserves - which CAN BE BORROWED - as there is a turnaround plan, which is,as under: Raise Fuel rates Raise KIBOR & slow down the economy Cutt of power to cases of power theft Raise Power tarriffs for heavy users Raise VAT on ACs,Cars & other fuel & power guzzlers Push exports Slash Luxury Imports Slash Govtt expenditures So IMF will give loan - as the repayment will come from, the above, which is a form of a debt, serviced from COST CUTS & NSR Lanka can DO NONE of the above. Pakistan NEVER TAXED fuel sold at pumps - which is Y its rates were the lowest in South Asia.So there was ample scope for a IMF bailout.dindooohindoo

Pakistan will never be a Sri Lanka - Part 3 If there is NO TURNAROUND OPTION on the table - then NO ONE WILL LEND ANY MONEY - ONLY OPTION IS GRANTS - WHICH ALSO,DID NOT COME - FROM THE INDIANS ! Had Lankans stuck with the Chinese - this fiasco would NOT HAVE HAPPENED - AS PRC WOULD HAVE ENSURED THE LANKAN SUCCESS - AS IT WOULD HIT THE SILK ROAD INITIATIVE & THE PRC INVESTMENTS,IN AFRICA.PRC is a MAHAYANA state & Lanka is a Theravada state - the common link is Buddhism.India destroyed & exterminated Buddhists 1500 years ago. THE INDIANS CONNED THE LANKANS,TO PART WAYS WITH PRC - & THE RESULT IS WHAT YOU SEE TODAY.HAD THE PLN DOCKED ITS NUKE SUBS & SHIPS AT LANKA - THEY WOULD HAVE ENSURED THE SUCCESS OF LANKA Lankans need to read history ! Some gems from the Mahabharata "Yama & all the Demons", are in South India & Lanka - as per the Mahabharata, Book 13: Anusasana Parva: Section XCVII He should make sacrificial offerings in due order; to Yama in the Southern region

Pakistan will never be a Sri Lanka - Part 4 And Pakistan has N- weapons - which is high stakes Poker - it HAS TO BE BAILED OUT. Then,it is next to Afghanistan and Taliban.- and the US and NATO does not want a porous border AGAIN Then the PLA is already sitting in Badkashan Then you have Iran as a border state with Pakistan THERE IS NO WAY THAT PAKISTAN CAN BECOME A LANKA - IT WOULD WRECK THE ENTIRE STRATEGY OF THE US/EU/UK AND NATO IN PAKISTAN.dindooohindoo

This is the umpteenth time we have heard this from the Chairman and possibly every Tom Dick and Harry of PTI. You and your party workers keep on threatening Pakistan and the people of death and destruction. ARE YOU REALLY A PAKISTANI ? TRY IT AND SEE WHAT THE PEOPLE IN PAKISTAN WILL GIVE YOU IN RETURN. WE LOVE PAKISTAN, AND OUR ARMED FORCES.
