KARACHI: A large number of people attended a ‘Karachi Rights March’, organized by the Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) Karachi chapter here Sunday to demand provision of basic civic facilities in the megacity.

The march, days ahead of the local bodies’ elections was attended by a large number of youths carrying placards and banners and chanting slogan: “JI is the only solution.” They marched from Hassan Square to the Federal Urdu University.

JI Karachi Amir Engr Hafiz Naeemur Rehman, addressing the rally claimed that the JI has become the only solution for the megacity and its citizens because the JI candidates and leaders do not have any criminal record.

He said that Karachi is home to more than 30 million multi-cultured people and they have their own political preferences. He hoped that for the sake of the megacity and its citizens, they will be voting for the JI to enable it getting its mayor elected.

He assured that if elected the JI’s mayor till take efforts for a better future of the city. He said that the JI had delivered in the past and will do so again if elected.

He said that water crisis is one of the core problems in Karachi. He said the last major water supply project for the city, K3, was completed during the tenure of Nematullah Khan. Since then, he added, not even a single drop of water was added to the supply for Karachi. He said the K4 water supply project is the only solution to the water crisis.

Engr Naeemur Rehman alleged that the Pakistan People Party and the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf only announced ‘fake packages’ for Karachi whereas the Muttahida Qaumi Movement received ‘share’ from both of the parties.

He said that the PPP government in Sindh allocated Rs5000 billion as development budget during the past 14 years. But where the PPP spent this budget, he asked. He also questioned the seriousness behind the announcement of Rs1100billion package, and the Karachi Transformation Plan.

The JI leader said that Karachiites are not asking for any undue favour or alms. Despite all financial constraints, Karachiites deposited tax of Rs1505 billion, posting an increase of 42 percent year-on-year, he said. He promised that the JI, if elected, would also address the issues of working women. He said public transport facilities would also be on the top of their agenda to resume the journey of development and progress of the megacity.
