Private-public partnership: Pakistan Post told to boost its commercial viability
The Senate's Standing Committee on Postal Services (Communications and Postal Services) on Friday directed Pakistan Post to utilise its abandoned land for private-public partnership on commercial basis to make the department financially viable.
The committee also directed Pakistan Post to consult all officials concerned about funds of parliamentarians and provincial ministers whether these funds could be used for the construction of post office buildings. Stressing the need for adopting a strategy for improving postal service across the country, members of the committee urged the department to adopt international postal standards. The committee also directed top officials of Pakistan Post to submit their recommendations before the committee, which would be forwarded to the Prime Minister and Finance Division for further action.
The meeting was presided over by Senator Daud Khan Achakzai. Highlighting the need for revamping the mailing system, members of the committee urged the government to install state-of-the-art equipment to make Pakistan Post a profitable entity, besides calling for providing adequate training.
The Committee said that the Pakistan Post should strictly follow the regional and provincial quota during recruitments and ensure transparency in this regard, besides submitting record of recruitments made by the department in all provinces before the committee. The committee expressed grief and sorrow over the loss of 258 lives in a Karachi fire incident and offered condolences and sympathies to the heirs of the victims. Committee members included Senators Abdul Ghafoor Haideri, Kamil Ali Agha, Muhammad Mohsin Khan Leghari, Zahid Khan, Muhammad Hamayun Khan Mandokhel, Mukhtiar Ahmed Dhamrah Aajiz and Nisar Muhammad.
