US Senator Mike Gravel has said the conviction of Dr Afia Siddiqui is a crime which unfortunately carried out on American soil. He was addressing a seminar at Lahore High Court Bar Association here on Friday which was organised by Judicial Activism Penal to raise the voice for release of Dr Afia.
Gravel regretted that Dr Siddiqui was illegally detained and subjected to torture in isolation before her controversial conviction. The Senator also condemned the recent anti-Islam film and stated that the people of US were not involved in such activities.
The counsel of Afia, Advocate Tina Foster, also addressed the gathering and said Afia was not given a fair trial. She said the attorneys who contested the trial of Afia were engaged by US and Pakistan governments but they had not pursued the case well. Foster lamented that neither fair investigation was done nor basic legal requirements were fulfilled in Dr Afia case. Dr Fozia Siddiqui, sister of Afia, and JAP's Chairman Azhar Siddique also spoke on the occasion.
