World Food Programme (WFP) team has completed the visit of rain and flood-hit areas and would start food operation soon after green signal from the government. Talking to Agency on Monday, an official of WFP confirmed that a team of the WFP had monitored and evaluated the extent of the damages in the first phase caused by the natural disaster.
To a question, he said WFP was also looking the relief measures taken by the provincial government in collaboration with the national and provincial disaster management authorities. According to an official of National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), at least 78 people have died and dozens injured in torrential rains and flash floods that have wreaked havoc in country over the past few days.
He said heavy monsoon rains during last week had destroyed more than 1,600 houses and partially damaged around 5,000 houses. To a question, he said that casualties in rain-hit areas occurred mostly due to the collapse of houses and people being caught in floods. Hundreds of people have been displaced so far and many more people can become homeless as the rains are still incessant in the country, he added.
