Protests against the blasphemous movie on Friday turned violent as enraged people set two cinema houses on fire and pelted the building of Sarhad Chamber of Commerce and Industry (SCCI) with stones. The angry protestors clashed with police in different areas resulting in the death of four persons, including the worker of private TV, and injuries to dozens of people, who were rushed to different hospitals of the provincial metropolis.
Due to the strike of traders and transporters, bazaars and roads of the city gave a deserted look. Petrol and CNG stations also remained closed. Mobile phone service also remained suspended. The city remained in the grip of protest demonstrations throughout the day. The protestors after ransacking two cinemas set them on fire and caused significant damage to the building of Sarhad Chamber.
Hashtnagri and Firdous areas on G.T. Road, Jamrud Road and Sher Shah Suri Road remained the centres of protest of demonstrations where dozens of protest rallies were taken out. Angry protestors also destroyed commercial plazas, private residences and foreign food restaurant on University Road while some protestors also hurled stones on Peshawar Press Club and took away security cameras installed at the gate and boundary wall. In Cantonment area, protestors destroyed telephone cabins, power transformers and signboards.
Roads leading towards the US Consulate and other international organisations were sealed off Parties, which staged protest demonstrations, included Shabab-e-Milli, youth-wing of Jamaat-i-Islami, Peoples' Youth Organisation (PYO), students' wing of PPP, Ahle Sunnat Wal Jamaat and Anjuman-e-Tajiran, Nauthia while the cultural wing of Pakistan Tehrik-e-Insaf set up a protest camp.
Jammat-Islami Town-III Peshawar also staged a protest demo which was led by a former provincial minister Kashif Azam. Protest demonstrations were also held in Kohat, Karak, Bannu, Mardan, Chitral, Mansehra, Abbottabad, Mardan, Dir and Federally Administered Tribal Area (Fata).
