US says dialogue between India, Pakistan 'a matter for those two countries'

  • Statement comes after PM Shehbaz Sharif had asked Indian PM Narendra Modi to hold talks to resolve issues
Published January 24, 2023

The US has said that while it has called for regional stability in South Asia, the “character of any dialogue between India and Pakistan is a matter for those two countries”.

During the US State Department’s weekly press briefing, spokesperson Ned Price was asked to comment about India rejecting Pakistan’s offer to talk about “burning issues” between the two neighbours.

“What are your comments on that? Because you always talk about the peace and stability in the region,” Price was asked during the briefing.

“We’ve long called for regional stability in South Asia. That’s certainly what we want to see. We want to see it advanced,” Price said.

He added that when it comes to Washington’s relations with India and Pakistan, they stand on their own and the US does not see these relationships as “zero-sum”.

India asked to hold ‘serious’ talks on Kashmir dispute

“They stand on their own…the pace, the scope, the character of any dialogue between India and Pakistan is a matter for those two countries,” Price added.

His statement comes after Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif had asked Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi to hold talks to resolve issues.

The prime minister, in an interview with Al Arabiya news channel, said, “My message to the Indian leadership and Prime Minister Narendra Modi is that let us sit down on the table and have serious and sincere talks to resolve our burning issues like Kashmir.”

“Minorities in India are being persecuted. This must stop so that message can go around the globe that India is ready to have talks,” he added.

He also said “We want to alleviate poverty, achieve prosperity, and provide education and health facilities and employment to our people and not waste our resources on bombs and ammunition, that is the message I want to give to Prime Minister Modi.”

“We are nuclear powers, armed to the teeth and if God forbid a war breaks out who will live to tell what happened,” he remarked.

Later, a statement issued by the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) clarified that talks with India can only take place after the country reverses its “illegal action of August 5, 2019” in Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK).

The PMO stated that without India’s revocation of reversing its illegal action of August 5, 2019, negotiations are not possible.

When there is a precondition from Pakistan to reinstate article 370, it is tantamount to saying Pakistan doesn't want talks. Then beseeching UAE to facilitate talks and begging US to help is just hypocrisy. Do they think US/UAE can arm twist India into reinstating article 370 to meet Pak preconditions? Instead of putting pre-conditions on India, Pak is better off meeting IMF preconditions.

The Indian's position on Kashmir is this. We have a Kashmir problem. But it is our problem. We will deal with it. We are not perfect, we treat Kashmirs like Pakistan treats Ahmadis. This is not correct for both India and Pakistan. Contrary to the portrayal in Pakistan, many do not support Modi's policies related to religion. But we are a democratic country, and the process will sort itself out. Pakistan signed the SIMLA agreement to resolve Kashmir. So there is no third-party mediation. No force on earth can reserve back article 370. India is a 3+ trillion economy and, in just seven years expected to become 8 trillion towards becoming the third largest in the world. Our economic strength means we can do some nasty stuff in Kashmir and get away with it--even though it is incorrect. All-\ powerful countries get away with bad stuff. India is no exception. For Pakistan, the obsession with India and Kashmir has dearly sunk the entire country. Today you neither have Kashmir nor an economy. India has both. Either you move past the Kasmir mindset and develop economically, or go deeper in the hole, you are sinking.

@Gp65, "When there is a precondition from Pakistan to reinstate article 370, it is tantamount to saying Pakistan doesn't want talks." This is the kind of gibberish that Hindustanis learn from their "news" channels. The revocation of Article 370 is not an internal matter - it affect the lives and livelihoods of millions of Pakistanis living under IOK suppression in the Kashmir Valley. Delhi can keep hiding behind Uncle Sam to protect it from having to talk to Islamabad, but they're only pushing themselves towards another 1947-style breakup...

@HashBrown®, Did you mean 1971 breakup?

@TimeToMovveOn, "Did you mean 1971 breakup?" Nope - I'm referring to the 1947 one, where you paid the price for your own myopic brutality by losing your "Akhand Bharat" forever. By the way, 1971 hasn't brought that dream any closer for you, in case you failed to notice...
