Maleeka Bokhari parts ways with PTI

  • PTI leader Jamshed Cheema and his wife Musrrat Cheema also announce to leave former prime minister Imran Khan’s party and politics
Published May 25, 2023

Former Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Member National Assembly (MNA) Barrister Maleeka Bokhari on Thursday announced her disassociation with the party following the May 9 violence, Aaj News reported.

"I resign from party positions, and announce my dissociation with PTI," said Bokhari as she addressed a press conference in Islamabad after being released from jail. Bokhari asserted that there was no pressure on her.

She denounced attacks on army installations on May 9, saying whatever happened on the day was troubling for every Pakistani.

She said she would continue her role as a lawyer for the improvement of the justice system and demanded a transparent investigation into the incident of May 9.

Hours after Maleeka's announcement, PTI leader Jamshed Cheema and his wife Musrrat Cheema said they were leaving former prime minister Imran Khan’s party and politics.

“This career which is in our blood … it was not an easy decision to leave politics. You serve the nation in politics, but not at the cost of armed forces … not at the cost of people who protect the country,” he said.

Jamshed said May 9 was the peak of the situation created due to a narrative spun by Imran Khan.

The violent protests that followed Imran Khan's arrest on May 9 shocked the country, shook its politics and left marks that will be felt in the coming months.

In the span of just a few days, PTI’s political significance has been jolted, as dozens of lawmakers and senior politicians, including Shireen Mazari, Fawad Chaudhry, Fayyazul Hassan Chohan, have left the party. The resignations include founding members, core committee leads, media strategists, and members of social media teams, all of whom have been essential to the party’s success.

The departure of these leaders has ignited severe speculation about the future of PTI, and some are wondering if this is the end of the road for the party.

@TimeToMovveOn, "1971 Geographical split and you never recovered. 2023 Social split and you will never recover." Firstly, this is a process through which eventually a representative form of government will emerge. Unlike Hindustan, where media conglomerates, business leaders and Hindutva hate preachers work in complete harmony to fool 1.5 billion people, Pakistan has several centres of power, and from this mess will eventually emerge a national consensus. Secondly - and this is my favourite bit - we recovered from 1971 much more than you ever recovered from 1947. Even now you trawl our news sites because our freedom still burns you so much. What you fail to understand is that even if your obsessive fantasy comes true and Pakistan collapses, we will never return into the fold of your vile country. Partition is done, and "akhand bharat" will remain the same childish myth that it has been throughout history. So keep posting, and keep dreaming - both are free!

@HashBrown®, You are the very epitome, aka poster child, of how geographical hemorrhaging can traumatize a person's mind and lead to a confused state. We are sorry that we did this to you, but we enjoy every day we see our Bangladesh separate from you and survive and prosper, BTW, did you ever read about operation searchlight in your history books, or did they cover it up as a hide-and-seek game?

These are the people who were going to give us Naya Pakistan and bring a Tsunami of change? Starting with IK to everyone in command are drawing room politicians who love using nice sounding words but zero action or sacrifice.

@TimeToMovveOn, The fact that your three-post rant didn't even attempt to address any of my reply pretty much proves my point. By the way, have you begun the process of bringing Bangladesh back into the realm of "akhand bharat" yet? If 1971 represents the failure of Partition, surely that land should have been reabsorbed into hindustan by now...so what's taking you so long? Maybe they don't want to lower their living standards to your levels just yet, who knows. Don't worry though, there's still a tiny handful of countries that suffer more starvation than yours - but you'll have to head to west Africa to find most of them, and I doubt they will want anything to do with you either.
