International Day of Older Persons would be observed across the globe including Pakistan on 1st October (Monday) in a befitting manner to remember contributions of senior citizens to their families and communities. The day will observe with the theme "Longevity: Shaping the Future" to examine issues that affect the lives of senior citizens.
Televisions, Radio and newspapers will publish interviews with senior citizens on various issues such as achievements they made to create a better society. According to national demographic survey‚ senior citizens constitute twelve percent of the total population of Pakistan and this figure is likely to rise to fifteen percent during the next five to ten years. Senior citizens foundations or welfare trusts are working for the welfare of senior citizens throughout the country.
On 14 December 1990‚ the United Nations General Assembly (by resolution 45/106) designated 1 October the International Day of Older Persons. In 1991‚ the General Assembly (by Resolution 46/91) adopted the United Nations Principles for Older Persons.
