RIYADH: An Israeli delegation is in Riyadh for a UNESCO meeting, an Israeli official told AFP on Monday, marking the country’s first publicly announced visit to Saudi Arabia.

The visit, for UNESCO’s World Heritage Committee session, coincides with speculation about a potential normalisation of ties between the two countries in future.

“We are happy to be here – it’s a good first step,” an Israeli official who did not want to be named, given the sensitivities of the visit, told AFP during the meeting.

“We thank UNESCO and the Saudi authorities.”

The five-member delegation travelled through Dubai, the official said, as there are no direct flights between Israel and Saudi Arabia.

They received their visas via UNESCO, the United Nations’ educational, scientific and cultural organisation, and arrived on Sunday.

The delegation, including a security official, joined the UNESCO meeting on Monday, sitting behind a sign that said “Israel” on the front of their desk.

The visit has been “very good – they treat us very well”, the official said.

Saudi Arabia does not recognise Israel and did not join the 2020 US-brokered Abraham Accords that saw Israel establish ties with two of the kingdom’s neighbours, the United Arab Emirates and Bahrain.

The world has moved on, moved on from religion-based relations which was the linchpin of Pakistan's Foreign policy. Keep remaining isolated, while everyone is progressing.

Muslims throughout the world back the Palestinians, and keep supporting them, until they achieve their goals and get their lands back.

Are we the only Muslim nation that stands with Palestine? Yes. While other Muslim countries opt for diplomacy in resolving the Palestine issue, we always choose to go south. Meanwhile, we are left behind in international relations, trade, business opportunity cost, and more or less everything else that matters to realize a strong economy, while our attitude is, what have we got to lose?

@KU, Israel has been building settlements in Palestinian lands without formally annexing most of the lands, for decades. It then agreed not to annex it, in exchange for diplomatic recognition, but continues to build settlements. Is that what you are calling, resolving the Palestinian conflict with diplomacy?

Those people who think that somehow Pakistan is left behind because of our reluctance to deal with the illegal occupying land stealing state of Israel, surely don't know Pakistan. As if incompetence, corruption, nepotism, elite capture, and constant interference in the democratic process has nothing to do with it, and somehow magically dealing with Israel will fix everything. Seriously?! And Pakistan's refusal to deal with Israel is nothing to do with them being Jewish, even if they were Muslims conquering, stealing and oppressing another people, we would oppose them.

@Az_Iz, Why is Palestine problem your problem? You have not makde Uigher Muslims your problem, but selectively choose only Palestine Muslims?

@Az_Iz, The basic question is this. Why is Palestine problem your problem? You did not make Russia's invasion of Ukraine in violation of UN regulations your problem (because of cheap Russian oil). You did not make KSA assault on Yeman Muslims your problem (because they keep you afloat). You did not make Uigher Muslims your problem (because they fund CPEC). So why only selective outrage for selective Muslims and peoples? Shouldn't you stand up for all Muslims injustice, anywhere everywhere?

@Kashif, So did you oppose KSA butchering Yeman? Did you condemn Russia butchering Ukraine?
