Contempt case against Malik Riaz: Supreme Court replaces Irfan Qadir with Qazi Jamil as prosecutor

The Supreme Court on Tuesday appointed former principal law officer Qazi Muhammad Jamil as prosecutor in the contempt of court case against business tycoon Malik Riaz Hussain. Announcing its reserved judgement in the case, a two-judge bench of Justices Ejaz Afzal Khan and Ejaz Chaudhry appointed Qazi Jamil as prosecutor after separating Attorney-General for Pakistan Irfan Qadir from the case.
The bench directed Qazi to submit a fresh list of witnesses and other record pertaining to the case, besides ordering to de-list all names of witnesses and record/proofs submitted by former prosecutor Irfan Qadir. Earlier, the apex court rejected Irfan Qadir's plea to include the name of Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry in the list of witnesses. Rejecting the plea to put Malik Riaz Hussain's name on Exit Control List (ECL), the bench granted exemption to Malik Riaz to appear before the court because of his poor health. The hearing was adjourned for an indefinite period.
