At least eight persons including five activists of Ahle Sunnat Wal Jamat (ASWJ) and a worker of Sunni Tehrik (ST) were killed in separate incidents in the city here on Monday. According to police and rescue sources, four workers of ASWJ were shot dead by unidentified armed riders when they were sitting in a perfume shop located near Jamah Masjid Siddiq-e-Akbar in the jurisdiction of Mobina Town police station.
The victims were identified as Umar, 27, Qari Abdul Shakoor, 27, Imran, 22 and his elder brother Saadullah, 25. The bodies were shifted to Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre (JPMC) for autopsy and later handed over to the heirs. DIG East Shahid Hayat said the culprits used silencer weapons for the killings and added that all the victims, who were the workers of ASWJ, might have fallen victims to the ongoing sectarian killings. Following the incident, tension prevailed in the area where all shops and markets were closed as miscreants forced the shopkeepers to pull down their shutters. Meanwhile, paramilitary rangers conducted search operation in the area and detained over a dozen suspects. No case was registered till filing of this report.
Another worker of ASWJ was gunned down in Musa Colony in the limits of Gulberg police station. The victim, who was identified as Abdul Hanaan, 27, was active worker of ASWJ in North Nazimabad sector. Later, Maulana Farooqi of ASWJ announced to observe mourning day on Tuesday (Today) and stage protest on Friday over the killings.
An activist of ST, Usman Qadri alias Lara, was killed by unknown armed riders when he was sitting with his friends near ST sector office in Sector 5-J in the limits of Bilal colony police station. ST Spokesman Fahim Qadri confirmed that the deceased was the active worker of New Karachi sector. He also condemned his killing and demanded the authorities to take responsible persons to task.
A cop, Jameel, 42, son of Amin, was killed in a drive-by shooting at G-7 bus stop located in Gulshan-e-Gazi, Baldia in the jurisdiction of Mochko police station. Police said the deceased, who was father of three, was not deployed in any police station and added that he might have been murdered over personal ground. No case was registered till filing of this report. Another man was killed in North Nazimabad area. Police said the identity of the victim was yet to be ascertained. The body was shifted to Abbasi Shaheed Hospital (ASH) for legal formalities.
