It is indeed heartening to note that the government and opposition (Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf or PTI) have started a dialogue to defuse growing political tensions in the country.
Whatever may be the outcome of the talks that have kick-started yesterday, it is increasingly clear that the negotiations between the two warring sides will lead to creating at least a modicum of political stability, which is conspicuous by its absence for quite some time, adversely affecting the country’s economy in particular.
What is also important to note is the fact that prime minister Shehbaz Sharif has positively responded to incarcerated PTI founder Imran Khan’s move of announcing his party’s committee for talks with “anyone” by following the recommendation of National Assembly speaker’s recommendation to form a committee comprising ruling coalition member to hold talks with PTI team obligingly.
That the atmosphere appears to be strongly characterized by mutual suspicions and mistrust is a fact in view of the fact that the two parties happen to be sworn enemies who will always hate each other.
But giving dialogue a chance is critical for taking the government and PML-N out of time-warp. Fortunately, the grim realities of politics have ultimately dawned on PTI and the incumbent government alike.
Both deserve commendation for taking the first baby steps towards the country’s social, economic and political future. But the onus of responsibility lies more with the government than a seemingly beleaguered PTI and its founder.
The government, therefore, is required to show greater flexibility insofar its approach to this highly important dialogue is concerned.
