ISLAMABAD: The Sunni Ittehad Council (SIC) – a political party that Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) backed candidates had joined after the February 8 general elections – on Tuesday challenged the 26th Constitutional Amendment in Supreme Court of Pakistan, terming it unconstitutional, illegal, and unenforceable.
The SIC in its petition stated that the 26th Amendment has eliminated the important features and fundamental values of the constitution, adding the said piece of legislation done under duress, has also eliminated the independence of judiciary, while the distribution of fundamental rights and powers has been affected.
It said that the 26th Amendment is an attempt to change, repeal or abolish the basic features of the Constitution. The amendment is illegal and unenforceable under Article 239 of the Constitution.
