LAHORE: The International Cricket Council (ICC) has accorded approval for Imam-ul-Haq’s inclusion in Pakistan’s squad for the ongoing ICC Champions Trophy, replacing the injured Fakhar Zaman.
The decision was taken by the Event Technical Committee, which was comprised of Wasim Khan, Usman Wahla, Sarah Edgar and former South African cricketer Shaun Pollock.
Imam-ul-Haq, who was part of Pakistan Shaheens in the warm-up matches ahead of the tournament, made a strong case for selection with a well-compiled 98-run innings against South Africa.
It may be added that Fakhar Zaman sustained a back injury while fielding against New Zealand at the National Stadium Karachi.
Fakhar Zaman has expressed his disappointment after being ruled out of the ICC Champions Trophy due to injury, stating that while the setback is unfortunate, he remains hopeful for a swift recovery.
Taking to his X on Thursday, Fakhar Zaman shared his sentiments, saying, “It is an honour to represent Pakistan. I have done so many times and will continue to do so, InshaAllah.”
He further added, “Being eliminated from the Champions Trophy is disappointing, but I believe things will get better with Allah’s will.”
The eight-team tournament is being played across three venues in Pakistan – Karachi, Lahore and Rawalpindi – as well as in Dubai, United Arab Emirates (UAE) from 19th February to 9th March.
Pakistan enter the tournament as the defending champions, having beaten India in the final of the 2017 edition, led by Sarfaraz Ahmed. Fakhar Zaman was the player of the final for his imperious 114 off 106 deliveries, while Hasan Ali was named the player of the tournament for his tally of 13 wickets in five games.
The first semi-final will be played on 4th March in Dubai. The newly-upgraded Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore will host the second semi-final on 5th March. If India does not qualify, the final will take place at the Gaddafi Stadium on 9th March, however, if they qualify, it will be held at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium.
