Goal-keeper Mazhar Abbas has been named to lead an 18-member Pakistan junior hockey team in the second Sultan Johar Bahru International Hockey Tournament being held in Johar Bahru (Malaysia) from November 11 to 18. Team was picked by the management in consultation with Olympian Tahir Zaman and was named by Manager-cum-Chief Coach Rana Mujahid Ali at Hockey Club of Pakistan on Monday. Other members of the team management included Danish Kaleem, and Anjum Saeed.
A 24-member Pakistan squad is due to leave for Malaysia via Bangkok on Tuesday night to take part in the six-nation event. This is for the first time when team was selected by the team management after abolishment of the selection committee by Pakistan Hockey Federation (PHF) Executive Board. Besides Pakistan, Australia, Germany, India, New Zealand and holders and hosts Malaysia are taking part in the 8-day competition.
Participation of the team of is in the build-up for next year's Junior World Cup being held in New Delhi in November 2013. "This is not the best team as five members of the junior team are picked in the senior team for the Champions Trophy training camp," Rana Mujahid said. "In presence of top teams it will be challenging event for us. We hope that it will be great exposure for the boys," former Olympian, said.
"We have selected the best possible outfit and hoping that they deliver their best in the event," he added.
