Firmness prevailed on the wholesale grain market on Saturday as most of the commodity items held the previous levels due to steady arrival and less buying interest by consumers due to persistent rise in prices, dealers said.
A record steep fall was seen in exports of fine type of Basmati rice during the last five months of the current fiscal year, this factor caused increase in broken rice by consumers, particularly by middle class, who cannot afford to buy high price of fine variety of Basmati, grain dealers said.
So, on the rice sector, Irri-white (broken) low type gained Rs 125 to Rs 2650 and best quality was higher by Rs 150 to Rs 2700, other types held the overnight levels in the process of slow trading, they said. It's a fact that wheat is a staple diet of the Pak nation, the government should provide the same commodity at reasonable rates, instead of that prices in local markets are not within the reach of a common man as prices were on gradual rise and the rates may go up further as last days, news appeared the wheat prices likely to move higher in days to come, they said.
Some wheat sellers said that buyers will get wheat at the higher rate as wheat growers are worried about short-fall in wheat production this season in the country, according to them, at the time of cultivation, they suggested the government to take necessary measures to increase wheat production, but the government did not heed the ear as usual, some brokers said.
As a result of government's unavailability to adopt or introduce timely cure as a save-guard, short fall in production to force the nation to buy at high rate, the hike in wheat prices is not a kind of an unannounced tax on the nation, who is already under pressure due to soaring prices of essentials, the said.
They also said that the country, which was exporting wheat due to bumper crop, now may start import to meet local requirements, it appeared that the government fixes taxes but it does not provide facilities to ease pressure over the nation, life is miserable of middle class people, how far, they will face these ugly situation?
On the seeds side, cottonseeds oilcake with bag Sindh (old) both types showed no change at Rs 400-500, cottonseeds oilcake with bag Sindh (new) low type did not show any change at Rs 900 and the good type was lower by Rs 50 to Rs 950, they added. Prices on the grams and cereals sectors were unchanged at the last levels, they said.
