Leader of the Opposition in the National Assembly Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan on Wednesday termed the appointment of new governor Punjab a deal to influence the upcoming general elections and said that his party will formally demand the removal of all politically appointed governors prior to the polls.
"Installing a new governor in Punjab is clearly a deal to influence the upcoming general elections by extending support to the sinking ship of Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP)," Chaudhry Nisar declared in a statement issued from his chamber. He, however, said that appointment of Makhdoom Ahmed Mehmood will neither benefit PPP nor South Punjab, as he had already been removed by party leadership from the basic membership of PML-F.
Wondering how was it possible for political governors to remain in place when the government was constitutionally set to dissolve on March 16 next year, he said that PML-N will formally demand the removal of all such governors before the general elections. He said that his party was not confused about the new governor of Punjab, adding that he (Makhdoom) had no link with the Muslim League after his party disassociated him.
Nisar maintained that that deal-making and bargaining politics of President Asif Ali Zardari was about to reach its end and spokesmen of PPP had nothing except hurling baseless allegations against political rivals.
Referring to the expected long march of Dr Tahirul Qadri, he criticised the Tehrik Minhajul Quran leader, saying that he had no space in the national political arena. "He (Qadri) made several forays in the national politics, but could secure just one seat for himself like Imran Khan and that, too, under the patronage of General Pervez Musharraf," Nisar said.
He said that although Qadri was able to gather people using various channels, but could not convert it into electoral strength. He questioned the logic of his claim of being an agent of change when he had been detached from national issues for the past five years.
He said that bunching up of Dr Qadri, Imran Khan and MQM had exposed their real motives and characters, adding that it appeared that Imran Khan wanted to use Dr Qadri as a channel to come into power after his 'revolution' failed to take off not unlike his past practice when he was helped by General Musharraf and former DG ISI General Pasha. Chaudhry Nisar said he was stunned by MQM's move to join Dr Qadri's long march against the government, wit which it remained an ally for five years. "This is the biggest joke and an act to deceive the people," he said.
