A reference in the memory of founding principal of National College of Arts (NCA) Professor Mark Ritter Sponenburgh, who passed away at the age of 95 in Oregon, USA was held on Friday. The event was attended by the former principals and teachers of the NCA, including, Abassi A Abadi, Salima Hashmi, Nazish Ata Ullah, Dr Shabnam Khan, Nayyar Ali Dada. M H Jafri, Saeed Akhter, Abdul Rehman Khan, Shehnaz Malhi, Maqsood Pasha.
Iram Zia, Dr Nadeem Omar, Professor Shireen Pasha, Nausheen Saeed and Quddus Mirza were also present on the occassion. The life and achievements of Professor Sponenburgh were warmly remembered by students and colleagues, who attribute the success of NCA as a premier art institution in Pakistan to his singular efforts.
Speakers referred to him as a "superb lecturer and teacher, and most highly respected by undergraduate and graduate students alike." They said that he redesigned the academic structure and gave new life to the then 75-year-old institution. Speaking on the occasion renowned architect Nayyar Ali Dada said that Spoenburgh was a person who revolutionised art education in Pakistan. Professor Shabnam Khan said that he build the institute with both head and heart. She also said that he taught how to work on new ideas and accept challenges. He is a true picture of responsible leader. Former principal NCA Salima Hashmi shared her memories spent with Sponenburgh.
Former principal Madam Abbasi said that Sponenburgh advised her that as a principal always open your doors for the students and visitors. He also advised her always follow the principles. A special memento carrying the portrait of Professor Sponenburgh, designed by Iram Zia and Majid Saeed Khan with quotes from his lectures were also presented to the participants.
