Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) members alleged that the authority's Director General (DG) was behind the attack on them on Monday last and that they had nominated him in an application filed by PTA officials for the registration of an FIR.
"We have filed an application with the Secretariat Police Station and nominated DG Sajjad Latif and seven other unknown armed persons but police have yet to register an FIR against them," member finance Nasrul Kareem Ghaznavi told to Business Recorder. He alleged that DG Sajjad Latif had brought the armed persons to the PTA headquarters.
PTA member finance alleged that there are reports that the uniformed persons wanted to kidnap them and to sign the Information Memorandum (IM) for auction of 3G licences, which they had strongly opposed earlier.
Inspector General of Police (IGP) Bani Amin when contacted said that there is no case against PTA's members. "PTA members are not wanted by Islamabad police in any case," he said. He expressed ignorance regarding the application purportedly filed by the PTA members at Secretariat Police Station. However, sources said that Ministry of Interior had directed Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) to conduct an inquiry into the incident.
DG Sajjad Latif, when contacted, rejected all allegations level to against him by PTAs members. However, he said he had informed the Cabinet Division about the misuse of power as well as relaxing regulations in relation to issuance of SIMs by two PTA members. Their application could be in reaction to his statement, he added.
Meanwhile, PTA officials on Wednesday staged a protest demonstration and demanded of the authorities concerned to register an FIR. A number of PTA officials staged protest at D-Chowk against the alleged attack on PTA's Member Finance Nasrul Karim Ghaznavi and member Technical Dr Khawar Siddique Khokar. The protesting PTA officials were holding placards inscribed with slogans against Secretary Ministry of Interior Khawaja Saddique Akbar and Federal Minister for Interior Rehman Malik. They also urged the Supreme Court (SC) to take notice of the incident.
