Ukraine's State Food Grain Corporation plans to buy and export 4 million tonnes of grain this year, Agriculture Minister Mykola Prysyazhnyuk said on Wednesday. "We plan (to buy) 2 million tonnes of grain through forwards and 2 million tonnes on the spot market, including barley, wheat and maize," Prysyazhnyuk told reporters.
Ukraine plans to harvest at least 50 million tonnes of grain this year, including 19 million tonnes of wheat. The former Soviet republic consumes about 26 million tonnes of grain per season and the exportable surplus could total 22-24 million tonnes in the 2013/14 season. Ukraine plans to export at least 21 million tonnes of grain, mostly maize, this season versus 22.8 million tonnes in 2011/12, according to Prysyazhnyuk's forecast. Ukrainian weather forecasters this week said mild and wet weather, which will predominate in Ukraine for the next six days, carries no threat for winter grain crops, most of which are in good or satisfactory condition.
