Indian designer creates sari with hijab for Muslim women
Indian celebrity designer Masaba Gupta, daughter of veteran actress Neena Gupta and cricketer Viv Richards, recently showcased her quirky yet traditional collection that was to her own personality, having a perfect blend between a sari and hijab.
Masaba is a well known B-town celebrity who has fought against the norms of the Indian society and her latest designer collection is yet another link to her frame of mind. Talking about the collection and the design inspiration, the 28-year-old designer said, “Do we have the freedom to wear whatever we want, when there are no dress codes for men?”
“The message is simple, dress how you like. However difficult to understand for the flag-bearers and big-wigs of the society”, Pink Villa quoted her. Masaba added that she has especially made this collection for the Muslim women so that they could embrace saris with all the freedom they desire.
To her comfort, the designer has perfectly combined two different traditions with immaculate harmony. “The starting point of the idea was to talk about our best-seller saris. And the sari has been constantly debated in relation to how it should be worn by a specific type of woman to why the youth are apprehensive about embracing it. That's why the decision to showcase the sari worn by real women, as opposed to models, in the campaign shoot," she said.
Speaking more about the idea behind the new design for the sari, she said, "Middle Eastern women think that a sari is intrinsically Indian, hence the idea of styling this drape like a hijab. My job as a designer is done when my clothes inspire freedom in Muslim women to adopt fashion the way they desire.”
