Ukraine is likely to increase its wheat exports to between 8 million and 9 million tonnes in the 2013/14 season, as crop yields recover from last year's levels which were hit by adverse weather, analyst UkrAgroConsult said. This compared with about 6.3 million tonnes in the 2012/13 season.
"Expectations of a rich harvest in 2013 under favourable weather in spring allow us to forecast the recovery of wheat exports in the next season to 8-9 million tonnes that can become the third-highest level in the history of Ukraine," UkrAgroConsult said in a report on Thursday. Drought during the autumn sowing and severe frosts in winter reduced Ukrainian wheat output by 29 percent year-on-year to 15.8 million tonnes in 2012.
But much better conditions this winter have allowed the Agriculture Ministry to forecast a harvest of at least 19 million tonnes this year. Analyst predicted the harvest at 21 million tonnes of wheat in 2013. Ukraine consumes about 12 million tonnes of wheat per season. Analysts have also said that Egypt was the major importer of Ukrainian wheat so far this season.
