Russia's largest Black Sea farm region, Krasnodar, may double its grain harvest this year, the regional department of the Agriculture Ministry said on Tuesday. Krasnodar is a key wheat-producing region for Russia, which is normally one of the world's top wheat exporters but was hit by drought last year.
The Agriculture Ministry is targeting a total grain harvest of 95 million tonnes this year, after last year's 71 million tonnes. The regional department says that Krasnodar could harvest 10.9 million tonnes of grain this year, including 7 million tonnes of winter wheat. Currently 90 percent of the region's winter grain crops are in good condition, the regional ministry said.
In 2012 the region harvested 5.5 million tonnes of grain with yield at 4.03 tonnes per hectare, down from 11.5 million tonnes seen in 2011. Meanwhile, Russia's winter grain plantings are in worse condition than the multi-year average, the head of Russia's Grain Union said on Tuesday, adding pressure on Russia's modest harvest prospects for this year.
