First of all let me introduce (Syed Ali Husnain) Jamal Naqvi. A qualified engineer who has recently retired from a senior managerial post at Karachi Shipyard. But it was his second love, first being literature, in that field he has proved an all-rounder. By now he has a score of books to his credit on variety of subjects plus collections of poetry.
The book under review is something different. A product of extensive research - an essay - a thesis submitted for his PhD. He has divided the essay into eight chapters namely: enlightenment, its impact and evolution in the sub-continent - the tendencies in Urdu literature of enlightenment and social realism.
A perusal of progressive literary movement (1935-1947), - Pakistani Society, - An analysis of Urdu prose after Pakistan coming into being, - Dialogue with the writers about the Urdu prose. Critical determination of the progressive ideas and tendencies, and conclusion. The whole exercise is within the limitation of Pakistan prospective.
The chapters have been dividend into two parts, the first three as background and the rest as fone ground as the obtaining prospective.
The love of literature is manifested in preparation of extensive and almost exhausting Bibliography.
In our conditions regarding any serious research efforts there are hurdles and impediments on every step. Therefore, any attempt in this respect must be helped and appreciated. So Jamal Naqvi deserves congratulation for the successful completion of the project and PhD degree in return.
