At least six people including a prayers' leader were killed in a powerful explosion inside a mosque of busy commercial and thickly populated Baqir locality here on Saturday. Talking to media persons, on the site of the blast, Superinten-dent Police (SP) City Circle, Khalid Hamdani said an explosive device was planted alongside the Mehrab of Bilal Mosque which exploded, when the worshipers were busy in their Zuhr prayers.
He said the blast also created a deep crater inside the mosque. Similarly, Assistant Inspector General (AIG), Bomb Disposal Unit Shafqat Malik said the explosive device had been planted inside a wall of the mosque. He said that four kilogrammes explosive and ball bearings were used in the explosion. He said they had collected sufficient evidence from the site, adding the bomb had been detonated through remote control.
The injured were rushed to nearby Lady Reading Hospital (LRH), where the conditions of four were stated to be critical. Chief Executive of the hospital Professor Dr Arshad Javaid told media persons that out of the total casualties' one was received dead while three others succumbed to their injuries in hospital. He said that 29 wounded people were under treatment and four of them were in precarious condition.
Meanwhile, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Governor, Engineer Shaukatullah has strongly condemned the act of terrorism in a mosque and expressed his deep shock and sorrow over the loss of precious lives in the tragic incident. The Governor while expressing his heartfelt sympathies with members of the bereaved families has said that the elements involved in the heinous crime do not have any concern with Islamic and moral values and cultural norms of the society and they could never escape from the law of justice.
The heinous crime, he remarked, deserves to be condemned by all. The Governor has also prayed for the eternal peace of the departed souls and courage to the bereaved families to bear the irreparable loss with patience. He has also wished early recovery of the injured.
