The prices of onion have sky-rocketed once again, its rate has sharply increased in retail markets of the city and the retailers blamed due to short supply from upcountry and its hoarding cause increased in prices. Retailers are demanding Rs 40-50 per-kg depending on size, quality and the area, the previous demand was Rs 25-30 per-kg.
Retailers claimed short supply of onion and its higher price at wholesale market which has pushed prices up at retail. Retails claimed that new onion crop is arrived soon and its prices may go down considerably. Sindh is a big producer of onions, which not only provides the vegetable to the whole Punjab but also produce exports good quality vegetables and fruits.
Vegetables and fruits consumption of around 20 million population of Karachi is catered through supply from interior Sindh, Balochistan and areas of Punjab province bordering Sindh. However prices of guava decreased from Rs 60 per-kg to Rs 40 per-kg, banana tagged at Rs 50 per-dozen, water melon Rs 50 per-kg.
