To mark the World Water Day, different organisations, public and private sector entities held seminars and special function to highlight significance of rich water reservoirs in the country. The Department of Water Management, Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa University of Agriculture, Peshawar, organised a seminar to observe the Day. Former Chief Secretary, Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa, Khalid Aziz was the Chief Guest on the occasion.
On the occasion, the department Chairman, Professor Dr Jamal Khan, Professor Dr Munir Khan, Rizwan Ahmad and Chief Planning Officer, Ahmad Saeed, faculty members and a large number of students were present. Dr Jamal Khan, while speaking on the occasion, explained about the different sources of water, stressed the need for provision of clean water in the country. If we can consume water resources through proper planning, it would complete our growing needs of water in future, he viewed.
He informed that the water table graph had been considerably down due to natural and man-made disasters. Most of the population is compelled to consume contaminated water in the present situation, he added. Other speakers, including Dr Gulzar, Dr Tahir Sarwar, Ahmad Saeed, Rizwan Khan, highlighted several proposals and suggestions for making consumable various sources of water. They stressed the need for proper planning for fully utilisation of abundant water reservoirs in the country. The speakers said that the water needed for irrigation, and energy would be fulfilled by construction of different dams under the comprehensive planning.
Khalid Aziz, while addressing as chief guest at the seminar said that the water in a huge quantity is wasted due to negligence of people. He said that the clean water causes for growing population issue, which might be complicated with the passage of time, if not, give proper emphasis water storage facilities under a concrete strategy.
The Agriculture and Water Council also organised a seminar to mark the Day. The organisation Chairman, Mohammad Akram Khan Afridi while addressing the seminar said that the International Hydrological Programme was indicated to take serious steps for resolution of water issues. He said that there is need of expertise in International Water Laws instead of looking for British legal experts for tackling with Indian water aggression.
