The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) is authorised to hold delimitation in any constituency at any time if it deems necessary, Secretary ECP Ishtiaq Ahmed Khan said on Tuesday. He was replying to questions of media persons outside the Supreme Court building here. Citing Section 10-A of the Delimitation of Constituencies Act of 1974, he said that the ECP was empowered to make amendments, alterations or modifications in the final list of constituencies as it deemed necessary.
He said the commission had sent 34 cases against parliamentarians for holding fake-degrees, providing incorrect information for necessary action. The Secretary said that the district and sessions judges had so far decided two cases of the fake degrees whereas 35 other cases were pending. So far, 69 cases had been registered with the commission in which lawmakers had been accused of holding fake degrees.
He recalled that a four-member committee, including a Higher Education Commission representative, was working on fake degree cases. He said that ECP members would meet Balochistan Republican Party chief Brahamdagh Bugti, Balochistan National Party-Mengal leader Akhtar Mengal and all other dissident Baloch leaders and try to persuade them to participate in the election. He said that Articles 62 and 63 of the Constitution would be fully implemented and any candidate not fulfilling relevant the requirements under these articles would be disqualified.
