SHANGHAI: China's yuan held gains against the US dollar at the domestic close on Tuesday, following a roller-coaster run as persistent weakness in the greenback prompted some bargain hunting to cap gains in the Chinese currency.

The spot market opened at 6.2579 per dollar and surged to a high of 6.2418 at one point, the strongest level since Aug. 10, 2015.

By the closing bell, the onshore spot yuan settled at 6.2728 per dollar, compared with the previous local close of 6.2849.

If the onshore spot yuan ends the late night session at its domestic close, it would have gained 0.13 percent against the dollar for the day.

The offshore yuan also followed the strengthening trend, surging to a high of 6.2364, the firmest level since Aug. 11, 2015. It was 0.19 percent firmer than the onshore spot at 6.2615 per dollar as of domestic close.
