Dual nationality case: Supreme Court serves contempt notices on Zardari, Ashraf
The Supreme Court on Wednesday issued contempt of court notices to President Asif Ali Zardari and former premier Raja Parvez Ashraf for not implementing its orders pertaining to dual nationality case. A three-judge bench of the apex court, headed by Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry, will hear the case on Thursday.
Notices were also issued to Senate Chairman Nayyar Hussain Bukhari, Chief Election Commissioner Justice (Retd) Fakhruddin G., Attorney General Irfan Qadir and Senator Rehman Malik. Mehmood Akhtar, the petitioner, had filed separate petitions, requesting the court to indict the said dignitaries over reappointing former interior minister Rehman Malik as senator.
Last month, the court had asked the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) about reasons for not disqualifying lawmakers holding dual-nationalities and asked why criminal cases were not initiated against former members of the National Assembly and provincial assemblies, when they had submitted their resignations.
