The Special Investigation Unit (SIU) of police on Tuesday arrested chief of Lashkar-e-Jhangvi's (LeJ) Karachi chapter from Hub, Balochistan on Monday. Addressing a news conference, SSP Farooq Awan said that the arrested accused, Tariq Shafi alias Doctor, was a known terrorist and was wanted in 14 cases pertaining to sectarian killings, wherein eight people have been killed.
"Shafi is also involved in the murder of Professor Sibte Jafar and has been declared absconder in the case," Awan said. A former head constable in police telecommunication wing in 2001, Shafi was later dismissed from service and arrested on charges of involvement in sectarian attacks. He was released in 2008. Police arrested Shafi on information provided by a former chief of LeJ Karachi, Hafiz Qasim Rasheed, who was arrested in 2012.
