Tehrik Minhajul Quran (TMQ) on Saturday staged sit-ins across the country against the alleged corrupt electoral system and a large number of TMQ workers participated in these sits-ins. Addressing the participants through video link, TMQ chief Dr Tahirul Qadri said due to the rotten electoral system the same corrupt and dishonest politicians were coming to power again.
"The election results will not be different from the previous results of 2008 and 2002 elections," he predicted, adding that the nation would whimper by the end of May and the winning candidates' loyalties would be purchased through due or undue means while the government would be formed with the help of small political groups.
He said TMQ was alone when they started their movement to bring reforms in the electoral system and till that day TMQ was still striving alone but they were not weak since they had Allah's support. TMQ started an agitation against the corrupt election system from December 23, 2012 after holding a public rally at Minar-e-Pakistan. He said after the general elections they would contact masses and prepare about 10 million people to change this corrupt political system.
Tahirul Qadri used aggressive language against the Election Commission and called the commission as corrupt and unconstitutional which was promoting the dacoits and land mafia through election process. He said Jamaat-i-Islami which was criticising our struggle also boycotted polling from Karachi and Hyderabad. TMQ also organised a sit-in at Mall Road in front of Naqi Market.
Earlier, it was announced that sit-in would start in the morning and conclude in the evening after polling but it was started at 12pm and concluded at 4pm. The sit-in comprised two sessions - first session was held from 12pm to 3pm and president Pakistan Awami Tehreek (PAT) Dr Rahiq Abbasi, president Lahore chapter Irshad Tahir and other local leaders also spoke on the occasion.
Meanwhile, spokesman of Minhajul Quran told BR that they organised about 300 processions in different parts of the country. In Lahore only divisional bodies participated in the procession and it concluded peacefully. TMQ workers did not participate in the current elections and also didn't cast their votes.
