Wolfgang Niersbach, the president of the German Football Federation (DFB), "would be the ideal man" to succeed Michel Platini as head of European football's governing body UEFA, in the eyes of the current president of the German Bundesliga (DFL).
DFL head Reinhard Rauball said in an interview with SID, an AFP subsidiary, that Niersbach would be an "excellent solution" to replace Platini if the Frenchman were to go for the FIFA presidency in 2015. Platini confirmed at the end of May that he was "thinking about" putting himself forward as a candidate to succeed current FIFA incumbent Sepp Blatter.
Niersbach was voted on to the UEFA Executive Committee at their London Congress last month. "It is a first step. He can envisage another step, depending on different factors. But he has our support and the right qualifications," added Rauball. There has never been a German president of UEFA, but former DFB president Theo Zwanziger is currently serving on the FIFA Executive Committee until 2015.
