The Supreme Court on Monday directed the petitioner to submit corroborative evidence regarding Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) Chief Altaf Hussain's legal status in the party. A 3-judge bench led by Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry heard a petition, filed by lawyer Zafarullah of Watan Party against May 11, 2013 telephonic address of Altaf Hussain from London to his party workers at Nine Zero, Karachi in which he reportedly threatened to separate economic hub from the rest of Pakistan.
During the course of proceedings, Zafarullah informed the bench that MQM as political party was registered with the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) with Farooq Sattar as its Deputy Convenor. He contended that MQM had violated the provisions of Political Parties Act, 2002 saying the MQM concealed facts regarding hierarchy of the party leaders while submitting Intra Party Certificate with the ECP after the general election.
He pleaded everybody knew that Altaf Hussain "is the chief of MQM, who is destabilising the internal situation of the country while sitting in London." Zafarullah prayed the bench to do away with the impression that the court had been sidelined in the current matter, adding that he urged the court to bar all the activities of MQM in the country.
The Chief Justice Chaudhry observed that the court was adhering to the Constitution of Pakistan saying, "We are never afraid of anybody, except Almighty Allah". The bench asked the petitioner to file an amended petition in the matter and adjourned the hearing of case for ten days.
