Users of Windows 8 might get the impression that you can't sign in with a local user account anymore and need a Microsoft email address such as from Outlook, Live or Hotmail. However, this isn't the case.
During the initial installation of the new operating system you can choose to sign in without using a Microsoft account and you can also change to a local account at any time using the Settings pane under the new Charm Bar that replaces the Start Menu in Windows 8. However, the advantage of using a Microsoft account is that many of your settings are then instantly synced between multiple Windows 8 systems and you can also connect instantly to Microsoft's Cloud-based feature SkyDrive.
