The Secretary Ministry of Petroleum and Natural resources Friday informed the committee on Petroleum and Natural Resources that Pakistan-Iran Gas Pipeline Project would complete within the stipulated period of December 2014. The meeting was held here at the Parliament House under the chairmanship of Senator Muhammad Yousuf.
The Secretary said Pakistan-Iran Gas pipeline Project was an important project which would help to overcome the gas shortage in the country. The committee recommended starting construction of power generation units in Gwadar and other suburban areas to utilise gas which would be obtained from the project for energy sector.
The Managing Director Sui Northern Gas Pipeline Limited (SNGPL) informed the committee that deteriorating law and order situation in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province as result of war on terrorism especially in Southern Districts is badly affecting the Company's sale figure.
Replying to a question of Senator Rubina Irfan, the MD said consumers in these areas were using gas directly by tapping gas mainlines and forcefully removing installed gas meters.
He said in the present scenario Company was unable to take action against the culprits. He said during past few years theft by non consumer had emerged as another challenge for the company, which had identified large number of non consumers.
The committee directed the MD to take action against those elements who are involved in theft of gas adding that company also take action against those officials who are involved in theft of gas.
