The officers of Directorate of Intelligence & Investigation-FBR Balochistan have remained unable to get performance rewards, despite contributing Rs 30 million to the national kitty through effective anti-smuggling campaign with inadequate resources.
According to sources, the Directorate had made record seizures of smuggled goods in fiscal year 2012-13 and contributed Rs 30 million to national exchequer only in June, which was said to be the biggest contribution among all Directorates during the last fiscal month of FY 2012-13.
Sources said that Directorate was presently operating with only 27 staffers including two senior officers and 11 sepoys for patrolling borders of Balochistan with Afghanistan, Iran, coastal belt, etc. Replying to a question, they said this acute shortage of staff had been communicated to the FBR time and again but no customs official was keen to serve in this province, due to poor law and order situation. They suggested that local youngsters should be recruited immediately otherwise the operations of Directorate would be affected severely. In spite of all said issues, the directorate carried out anti-smuggling operations in FY 2012-13 throughout the length and breadth of Balochistan including Mashkhel, Chaman, Gaddani/Hub and Gwadar/ Jiwani, Quetta and other places and made record seizures of smuggled goods worth Rs 320 million. The goods seized included non-duty paid vehicles, Iranian diesel, Black tea, Tyres, Charas, Cloth, Wires and Cables, 36 falcons among other goods.
The sources further said that instead of recognising the efforts of the Directorate, the FBR had not nominated any officer for performance reward, which was not only discouraging the officers but it would also affect the performance of the Directorate in future.
