Elon Musk plans for Hyperloop speed to reach half the speed of sound

Elon Musk is once again making the headlines, as he now plans to break records by making his Hyperloop as fast as half the speed of sound.

The CEO of SpaceX and Tesla tweeted on the social media site informing everyone about plans of an ‘upgraded SpaceX/Tesla Hyperloop speed test’ and that it will happen soon. He also announced that in the test he will try pushing the Hyperloop pod ‘to reach half the speed of sound (and brake) within 1.2km’. This means bringing the pod to stop within three quarter of a mile and taking it to speeds of up to 383mph, as Digital Trends explains.

However, in his following tweet, Musk accepted that the idea of pushing the limits of the system could possibly end up disintegrating the Hyperloop pod to shredded metal but is thrilling anyway. He said that the idea is ‘kinda nutty for such a short distance, so could easily end up being shredded metal’, yet it was ‘exciting either way’.

Back in August, the Tesla and SpaceX-branded pod recorded the fastest Hyperloop pod at that time by hitting the top speed of 220mph. However, Musk’s biggest competitor, Virgin Hyperloop One, set up a speed record of 240mph back in December. Virgin Hyperloop One has also discussed plans for Hyperloops systems in countries including Saudi Arabia, India and Missouri. It plans on having three Hyperloop systems running by 2021, reported Business Insider.
