The Lahore High Court Chief Justice (CJ) here on Monday directed the Ministry of Religious Affairs to allocate Hajj quota to 19 Hajj Group Organisers (HGOs) who offered bid up to Rs 250,000. The CJ was hearing several petitions filed by newly enrolled HGOs alleging that the Ministry was not allocating quota among the qualified organisers who had offered lowest bids.
The CJ adjourned further hearing till July 26 and directed the Ministry to complete the process for allocation of quota to the 19 eligible organisers including issuance of offer letters and recognition letters. A Ministry's official suggested that that the court should set a maximum limit of Hajj expenses. However, the CJ observed that fixing expense limit was not the job of the court. The purpose of the courts' proceedings was to make the Hajj affordable for every common citizen, CJ added. The petitioners had submitted that the Ministry was awarding quota on the basis of personal liking and disliking and ignoring the merit.
