Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan on Wednesday said the overall police system, including that of Islamabad, needs revamp/up-gradation, as presently the country is passing through a sensitive period of its history. Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan, while addressing the passing-out parade of 396 personnel of Islamabad Police at Police Lines Headquarters, said the country was passing through a critical phase that needed modernisation of police force on latest lines to ensure security of people.
He said that not only Islamabad police, but all security agencies were facing numerous problems but "we will overcome these difficulties soon. The government is introducing basic police reforms to enable the institution to respond to the needs of the public at large."
He further said that police would be modernised on latest lines while equipping with state-of-the-art technology. The Interior Minister urged Islamabad police to become people-friendly in dealing with the general masses, adding that 50 percent of the problems could be resolved if the police force was polite. However, he asked police to take strict action against criminals.
"The capital police personnel involved in wrongdoings should mend their ways, otherwise they should be shown the door," the minister said. He also assured that all demands of Islamabad police would be met and effective steps would be taken for their welfare and better future of their families.
He paid tribute to Jawans of law enforcement agencies who lost their lives in the line of duty. He urged that Islamabad police should come up to the standards which it set at the time of establishment. The Minister said that 14 police stations of Islamabad were computerised and the remaining five would be connected to the main system soon. Inspector General of Police (IGP) Sikandar Hayat said the probationers were given training about basic law, field duty, crowd control, anti terrorism and ways to stop a suicide attacks.
He said the notification for upgrading the status of Islamabad police training centre to a training college should be issued. The training college would have the facilities for holding training courses for senior police officers, he said.
Earlier, the Minister gave away awards to the probationer policemen who won distinction during their training and inspected the parade. Constable Shakeel Ahmad and P/ASI Naveed-ul-Hassan for Best in Fire, Constable Muhammad Faisal and P/ASI Arshad Ali for Best in Parade, Constable Hafiz Muhammad Bashir and P/ASI Arshad Ali for 'All round first' award, and Lady P/ASI Shabana Kausar for 'second in parade' were among the winners.
Chief Commissioner Islamabad Jawad Paul, Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG) Headquarters Islamabad Khalid Khan Khattak, Assistant Inspector General (AIG) Operations Islamabad Dr Sultan Azam Temuri, AIG Establishment Islamabad Ashraf Zubair Siddiqui, AIG Special Branch Islamabad Waqar Ahmad Chohan, Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Islamabad Dr Muhammad Rizwan, SSP Headquarters Islamabad Sajid Kiani and Acting SSP Traffic Asmat Ullah Junejo were also present on the occasion.
