An exhibition of Tassaduq Sohail's latest paintings at the Chawkandi Art Gallery, Karachi are something written in an abbreviated form, as a record or reminder, which he wants to share with other people.
Concealing the truth hidden in his canvases with in decorative figures his paintings are an informal letter revealing distinctive elements, feelings and atmosphere to the viewers. The characteristic features of his paintings give a hint of dissatisfaction and satisfaction at the same time.
His canvases show humans side by side wild animals lost in a forest. These animals are actually the inner-beasts of people which are loose in his paintings but living in a peaceful manner. He symbolise strength and power by elephants and horses creating a vivid texture, which discuses human psychology and emotions in detail. The canvases provide a medium for him to express his nostalgic memories and signify the linkages with his past. His courageous strokes and variety of subjects and thoughts gives an impressive and pleasing look to his work.
His work is layered with complexity and depth raising questions and addressing issues in a pictorial syntax revealing hypocrisy, greed and exploitation - a social commentary.
One can see countless figures appearing on the canvas - humans, animals, plants, fish, birds and mutants also, struggling to find space. Everyone can derive a different meaning from a canvas according to the viewer's observation. There are canvases with multi-imaged mosaic. Sohail's rich imagination took him to a world where everything seems to be possible. A landscape with men and beasts living peacefully together in a fantasy environment showing communion of humans and wild animals, lurking shadows and blood-shot eyes, trees, elephants, serpent and all kinds of mythical beasts and swimming mermaids.
A remarkable feature indicated by his paintings is his ability to say a lot in very limited space. His work is almost in miniature style, painting fetching details on minute canvases. Gloomy characters showing melancholy in bold bright colours stunned the viewers. His work has seasoned with the passage of time and different beasts and humans emerged softly and silently in their assigned areas.
His creativity is well supported by his ability to play with colours. It is highly commendable that each colour blending with other like a rainbow where no single colour can be distinguished from other by a definite line. His rich imagination took him to an amazing world with bizarre landscapes and strange creatures. His canvases are amusingly unusual with surreal art.
