Pakistan has thrown its weight behind Saudi Arabia's stance on United Nations Security Council reform and forward movement on all issues including Syria, Palestine and other long-standing issues such as Kashmir. In a statement, Foreign Office spokesperson Aizaz Ahmad Chaudhry stated that Pakistan enjoys close brotherly and friendly relations with Saudi Arabia and fully understands the imperatives and compulsions which led to their decision not to join the Security Council after being elected to its non-permanent seat for the term 2014-15.
"Pakistan agrees with the Saudi government that there should be forward movement and progress on all issues including Syria; Palestine and other long-standing issues like Kashmir," he said, adding that Pakistan has always advocated an effective and feasible reform of the Security Council based on consensus among the members. He said the UN Security Council should be equitable, fair and democratic in nature. "The government of Pakistan has always supported all efforts to ensure peaceful resolution of disputes and is confident that the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia will continue to play its role in maintenance of international peace and security," he added. On Thursday, Saudi Arabia won, for the first time, a seat as a non-permanent member in the UN Security Council but refused to accept the rotating seat, saying the council is incapable of ending wars and resolving conflicts.
