The federal cabinet decided on Monday that no one would be allowed to sabotage peace process and urged the world community to support efforts aimed at bringing about peace and eliminating terrorism on a permanent basis. A special meeting of the federal cabinet chaired by Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif also reiterated the government stance that drone strikes 'are absolutely unacceptable.'
The prime minister also directed the Minister for Interior Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan to present a report on the situation subsequent to recent drone strike and a future strategy to be adopted following consultations with political forces during the current session of the parliament.
The prime minister in his opening remarks stated that the continuation of regrettable and condemnable drone attacks simply indicated that Pakistan's stance towards peace and elimination of terrorism on a permanent basis had not been comprehended. He said it was proved during the recent All-Parties Conference (APC) that the country's political and military leadership as well as media and civil society wanted to resolve the issue of terrorism through serious and meaningful talks.
We are fully aware of the seriousness of the problem, Sharif added. The prime minister also referred to his recent statement in which he stated that peace process was going to start soon as both sides were in contact in this regard. He further stated that drone attack seriously damaged peace efforts but expressed confidence that peace process and talks would not be allowed to be derailed. He said that the decisions of the APC would be respected. The Minister for Interior reportedly briefed the cabinet meeting about his efforts towards peace process.
