Awami National Party (ANP) on Monday submitted an adjournment motion in Senate against Jamaat-i-Islami (JI) Chief Syed Munawwar Hassan for ridiculing the martyrs in the ongoing war against terrorism. The adjournment motion, duly signed by ANP Provincial President Afrasiab Khattak and Senator Zahid Khan, says Pakistan Army is fighting a war against terrorism and the statement of JI Chief is against the sovereignty of the country.
"The JI Chief, through his controversial statement, has made a wilful attempt to bring down the moral of the Army and the government should take serious action against him," it added. Zahid Khan, ANP spokesman told journalists that the Munawar's statement was tantamount to betraying the soldiers, civilian people as well as the country, adding he should be tried under Article 6 of the constitution. Pakistani Army has issued a brisk statement flaying JI Chief Syed Munawar Hasan, who had risibly claimed that Army soldiers killed in the ongoing war against terrorism were merely dead people, not martyrs - a word he reserved for terrorists, involved in killing of thousands of innocent civilians and Army Jawans.
A spokesman of the Army strongly reacted to the statement and sought an unconditional apology from the top cleric, two days after he issued his widely-panned statement in an interview to a private TV channel. The JI cleric also dubbed Hakimullah Mehsud, the Tehreek-e-Taliban (TTP) chief killed in a US drone strike on November 1, a martyr.
ISPR has demanded an unconditional apology from the top cleric: "The people of Pakistan whose loved ones laid down their lives fighting terrorists, and the families of the martyrs of the Armed forces demand an unconditional apology from Syed Munawar Hasan for hurting their feelings. It is also expected that Jamaat-i-Islami should clearly state its party position on the subject."
