Protest demonstrations were arranged by different religious parties in the provincial metropolis on Friday, to condemn the Rawalpindi incident urging the government to arrest culprits and award them exemplary punishment.
Workers and leaders of number of religious parties staged a protest demonstration in front of the Lahore Press Club on the call of Ahle Sunnat Wal Jamaat (ASWJ) after Juma prayers against the Rawalpindi tragedy, which was participated over by students from different religious Madaris. They chanted slogans against the failure of the government in protecting the lives and property of the citizen and also against terrorism and terroristic elements.
Speakers said terrorism in the name of religion and attacks on Madaris was a matter of concern for the rulers. They said "we admit that foreign hands were involved in fanning sectarianism in the country but the government should expose such elements."
They urged the participants and the masses to remain peaceful and reject terrorism and terroristic elements by showing peace.
Majlis-e-Wahdat-ul-Muslimeen also arranged a protest demonstration at Bhati Chowk where its provincial Secretary General Allama Abdul Khaliq Asadi addressing the participants said that terrorism was never done by the participants of Eid Milad-un-Nabi (PBUH) or Muharram processions rather those processions were made targets of terroristic acts. Terming the Rawalpindi incident as a conspiracy, he urged the government to make a crackdown against terrorist elements.
In order to maintain peace in the city, the police had made elaborate security arrangements and huge contingent of police remained present at Mall Road from Masjid-e-Shuhda to Faisal Chowk in front of the Punjab Assembly to avoid any untoward incident.
Similar security arrangements were made at Lahore Press Club where the police blocked all the roads coming to Simla Pahari crossing and only participants of the demonstrations were allowed to reach the place. Youths of different religious parties continued checking all the demonstrators personally and allowed them to join the gathering after body search.
