Sindh High Court (SHC) on Tuesday issued a notice to health secretary, secretary establishment division Islamabad and registrar of Dow University of Health Sciences (DUHS) on a petition seeking removal of DUHS vice-chancellor. A division bench of SHC, headed by Justice Muhammad Ali Mazhar, also issued the notice to Advocate General Sindh and deputy attorney general.
The petitioner, Professor Surgeon Dr Ataur Rehman submitted that the Sindh Universities Laws (Amendment) Act, 2013 was legislated on August 28, 2013 and according to section 10 (5) of the said statute section 12 (1) of the Dow Universities of Health Sciences Act, 2004 has been amended with the following provision: Provided that the Vice-Chancellor who has remained the Vice-Chancellor of the University for more than two terms shall, on commencement of this Act, cease to hold office. The petitioner submitted that the Dow varsity vice-chancellor had ceased to be vice-chancellor by virtue of the Sindh Universities Law (Amendment) Act that said no VC could serve for more than two terms.
