Governor Punjab Chaudhry Muhammad Sarwar has expressed optimism that Pakistan will get GSP Plus status in the meeting of European Union being held on December 11, 2013. After getting the GSP Plus status, Pakistani exports will reach 2 billion dollars in two to three years while millions of jobs will be created, he added.
He was addressing the 14th Convocation of the University of Central Punjab held here Tuesday. Governor Punjab awarded degrees to 811 graduates. Chairman Board of Governors UCP, Mian Amir Mahmood was also present on the occasion. He said that Pakistan played the role of front line state in the war on terror in which 50,000 people lost their lives. Despite this world is not recognising the contributions and sacrifices of Pakistan. He also said that he tried to build the positive image of Pakistan when he was campaigning for the GSP Plus status for Pakistan.
Governor Punjab urged the young graduates to play their role for building the progressive image of Pakistan. He advised the students to be punctual, always remember your past and never give up hope. He said public and private sector should work together for the uplift of the education sector of the country.
Speaking on the occasion Pro-Rector university Of Central Punjab Professor Dr Muhammad Zafarullah said that education is indispensable for an honourable existence in today's world. Education not only plays an important role in the socio-economic growth of a country, it contributes significantly to the development of democracy and good governance as well. For a developing country like Pakistan stimulus to economic, political and social growth can only be provided through education and research. Nothing gives greater dividends to a nation than an investment in education.
Zafarullah said that the development of newly industrialised countries provide a clear evidence. Pakistan, which is spending hardly two percent on education has over 25 million children out of schools, the second highest in the world. There is a linear relationship between accessibility to higher education and GDP per capita. Pakistan's accessibility to higher education in the age group of 17-23 year is only 8 percent compared to South Korea's 98 percent. South Korea has one University for every 142,000 of its population. Pakistan has one University for every 2.1 million of its population.
We are fully cognisant of government's efforts to promote and provide widespread opportunities for education to the masses. We are also aware of the constraints under which public sector economy operates.
While talking about the missions and objectives of UCP, Zafaraullah said that our mission is to provide a progressive learning environment to the youth of this country, therefore, we keep investing heavily in modern technological tools and infrastructure at our university to prepare our students to meet the demands of contemporary world in which IT has overtaken almost every aspect of life. We want our students to take full advantage of the opportunities provided by this amazing technology.
